Where Household Incomes Rose, ZIP by ZIP

Of the 18,536 residential ZIP codes whose boundary held and whose incomes can be compared, 2,643 (14.3%) saw median household income rise from 2015-2019 to 2020-2024 by more than the surveys' margins of error, in 2024 dollars; 892 (4.8%) saw it fall, and the rest cannot be told apart from no change. Chance alone would put about 927 ZIP codes on each side at this confidence even if nothing had changed: the rises are about 1,716 more than chance, the falls are within it.

Method and limits

ZIP codes whose 2020 ZCTA keeps at least 90% of its 2010 land (19,304 of them); 2015-2019 incomes multiplied by 1.22699 (BLS CPI-U, 2024 over 2019 annual averages); a change counts when it exceeds 1.645 standard errors of the difference, from both published margins (90% confidence: about 5% of unchanged ZIP codes cross the line on each side by chance, so single ZIP codes in the lists are evidence, not proof). Medians at the $250,000 cap are excluded. The lists rank ZIP codes of 5,000 or more people living in households; a state's tested share depends on how many of its ZIP codes kept their boundary between the 2010 and 2020 maps.
